Yenagoa Study Centre

Yenagoa Study Centre is one of the Centres in the South-South Geo-political zone of the National Open University of Nigeria providing highly accessible ODL education to the region.  Dr. Oki and Dr. Johnson Dangana coordinated the academic activities of the Centre in 2003/2004 briefly before a substantive Centre Manager - Dr. S.A. Diri who eventually took over the affairs of the Centre.  Prior to the establishment of the Centre, the then Governor of Bayelsa State Chief D.S.P. Alamieseigha responded to the Federal Government’s directive to release either one of the defunct SDP and NRC building by allocating part of the former Public Service Training building as temporary office for the take-off of the Centre on 16th November, 2004.  The SDP and NRC buildings were as at that time occupied by the Nigeria Police Force and the Government House (Creek Haven) respectively.

The Yenagoa Study Centre recorded a total of seventy-eight (78) students in the different schools then at her inception. Facilitation classes were taken from Mondays to Saturdays with the cooperation of students, facilitators and the Ministry of Education.

In September 2010, the then Study Centre Manager, Dr. S.A. Diri passed on to glory and Mrs. E.O. Izulu took over the mantle of leadership from September 2010 to April 2011 when Mrs. Florence Komo Abu, a retired Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs, Bayelsa State took over as the 1st Centre Director till February 2013 when she retired.  Thereafter, Mrs. Makbere U.A. took over briefly before Mosugu, G.A. took over the mantle of leadership as the Acting Centre Director from 1st May, 2013 to date.

As at today, the Yenagoa Study Centre has about 5,000 of students’ population in the various faculties.   The Centre has also graduated over 500 students since its inception. So far, the ODL mode of National Open University of Nigeria in Yenagoa Study Centre has produced many graduates including high ranking Nursing personnel, Uniform men and top government officials who could not abandon their offices just to have access to formal higher education.

In the year 2008 to 2011 the Centre has been able to collaborate with the State Government to secure an administrative office for the Centre by the House of Assembly quarters Road, 2nd gate, Ekeki Azikoro and later moved the office to the former Universal Basic Education World Bank office beside UBA Bank, Swali Road; from there to its present location at No. 288 Mbiama-Yenagoa Road, Ekeki when the 2012 flood ravaged the city of Yenagoa.

In 2008 due to the Centre’s constant communication to the Bayelsa State Government, the Government acceded to our request and a 5-hectare of land at Azikoro Village was allotted to the Yenagoa Study Centre for our permanent site which is yet to be developed by the State Government.

The Centre has very good study environment, conducive pen-on-paper (POP) and e-examination centre.  The centre has a total of 15 proactive staff that are well trained in staff/students relations matters.
